The FIFA World Cup is the ultimate clash between different countries as they fight it out to snatch the title away from the defending champions. Since the 2018 World Cup is just another month away, fans cannot contain their excitement anymore.
Russia is scheduled to host the FIFA World Cup 2018, and if the preparations are anything to go by, it going to be gala affair. Not only have they revamped their old stadiums. But they have also created new stadiums in different parts of the country so that the standard of the game never falls. Moreover, Russia also wants to use this opportunity to make football a more popular sport among its youth.
The recent issue:
Recently, the striking resemblance between the Mordovia Arena in Russia and Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium has made the news and people are puzzling about how that came out. Not only do they have the same shape, the exterior seems a bit similar too. However, since the similarities that have emerged, the FNB architects have stated that they are okay with it.
About the Stadium Meant for World Cup 2018
Work on the stadium began in 2010 when the FNB Stadium was already complete. There has been a fair amount of speculation, but the original FNB architects have refused to take offence at this situation. While the newly built Russian Mordovia Arena does share some distinct similarities with the FNB Stadium, it has been pointed out humorously that copying is actually an act of flattery. Both the stadiums also have similar orange seats as well.
The situation has not gone wild:
However, nobody has accused the architects of the Russian Stadium to have plagiarised the design yet. The South Africans admit that the designers of the Russian Stadium might have framed it from a different narrative and with a different objective. The similarity could be attributed to coincidence.
Designed by Saransk Grazhdan Proekt, the Mordovia Arena is among the nine stadiums which were built by Russia especially for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. It is a 44,000 seater stadium, and the construction work was completed at the end of April.
The colour palette and exterior design of the Mordovia Arena are heavily inspired by Mordovia’s folk art according to reports. On the other hand, the FNB Stadium is said to have been built based on a calabash while cladding is meant to represent fire and earth.
A field like architecture does not always see originality because creativity is not necessary unique always. Rethinking an idea and representing it differently is also an accomplishment. The Russian designers do get certain liberties because they are dealing with an artistic field here. The situation has not caused any problems as such, But South African citizens are outraged about the blatant similarities in the two designs.
