The Save South Africa campaign commends the Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete, for enabling Members of Parliament to vote with their consciences during tomorrow’s Vote of No Confidence in President Jacob Zuma. In doing so, the Speaker has ensured MPs – and ANC MPs in particular – will put their country first, and save South Africa from any more of the destruction that has become the hallmark of Zuma’s presidency.
Presuming all opposition MPs support the support the motion of no confidence to remove President Jacob Zuma from office, a minimum
of 50 of the 249 ANC MPs will need to vote with the opposition.
(The PAC have already said they will abstain from voting.)
National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete has announced that the Motion of No Confidence in President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday shall be conducted by a means of a secret ballot.
The Speaker said she arrived at her decision after weighing a number of factors.
She said while the electorate had a right to know how their representatives – who took an Oath of Office – vote while in the house, she also had to consider the environment in which MPs would vote, also taking their security into consideration.
The decision, she said, was coupled with ensuring a spirit of transparency.
“This decision is therefore in the best interest of the country. The Speaker is required to guard the procedure of this house and to ensure that the outcome of this very important vote is credible.
“The Speaker must do this without fear or favour. It is with that in mind that this decision is also about putting the resilience of our democratic institution to test.
“Having considered all the factors, and mindful of the fact that this decision is not setting a precedent, I determine that voting on the motion of no confidence in the President on 8 August 2017 will be by secret ballot”.
The Speaker said the decision to grant the secret ballot on the no confidence vote was in the best interest of the country.

This motion by the Democratic Alliance, who are our political nemesis is a political ploy designed to undermine our popularly elected government, fracture and weaken the ANC with an aim of removing it from government by any means outside of general elections. This motion is therefore in the interest of the Democratic Alliance and opposition forces and not in the interest of our country. We reiterate our stance that the ANC will vote against this motion. We will not vote with the opposition to collapse our democratically elected government.
