Suspended police commissioner Riah Phiyega’s term will come to an end
on June 10 and by August, “we should have a national police commissioner in the Republic of South Africa”.
President Jacob Zuma has appointed Lieutenant-General Lesetja Mothiba as the Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), with immediate effect.
Police Minister Fikile Mbalula made the announcement at a media briefing in Parliament, saying the permanent National Police Commissioner Riya Phiyega remains suspended.
Mbalula says apart from no longer being acting national commissioner Phahlane has also been suspended in his permanent position in the police:
“LT. General Phahlane is also suspended from his position as divisional commissioner with immediate effect. This government has committed itself to being proactive in matters of corruption and defence of our constitution, the independency of IPID, the judiciary and Chapter 9 institutions.”
Lt-General Mothiba is currently the SAPS Divisional Head of the Management Intervention Unit.
