The Russian Blue is a handsome, gentle, intelligent cat that is content with company or on his own. His reserved temperament and gentle voice may make him seem unfriendly or stand-offish, however he does enjoy attention and a good game.
Being intelligent, he needs stimulation to keep him mentally and physically fit. He quickly learns how things work, how to open doors and cupboards, and other tasks and tricks. He is a good jumper and will find his way up most obstacles in the house. When he seems to be missing, look inside or look up!
With their reserved nature, it is important for kittens to be thoroughly socialised to people, home life and other pets. They can be wary of boisterous children and bouncy dogs. They thrive on routine and consistency, knowing what happens when and where is important. Too much change, or changes made too fast, will upset him.
His luxurious sliver-grey coat, green eyes and graceful body contribute to his handsome looks. He is easy to groom if done regularly. These are generally healthy cats but may be disposed to bladder stones.
Russian Blue cats evolved in the area of Archangel, south of the Arctic Circle in Russia, and were originally known as Archangel Cats. Legend tells that they went on board the Cossack ships as mousers, and found their way to other countries. In Russian Folklore he has healing powers and brings good luck.
